Cosmic ray detector
In spite cosmic rays are known for more than a century, yet little is known about their origin. To study the particles using devices such detectors.
This is a detector consisting of four plastic scintillators. When a charged particle passes through one of these scintillators releases some of its energy is converted into light.
The light sent to the photomultiplier produces an electrical signal. The signal is processed by the electronic reading and possibly sent to a counter or a computer.

2009 - International Year of Astronomy
2009 is the year of Astronomy and also the year of Galileo Galilei: 400 years ago Galileo Galilei perfected the telescope but above all had an idea extraordinary unobstructed view of the sky! Galileo was the first man to observe and study the sky with a scientific method. To reach this aim he contrived the first telescope. With this very simple tool he observed and described the satellites of Jupiter and made the complete mapping of the lunar surface. In the photo above we can see some examples of telescopes he built .

The year 2009 marks the bicentenary of Darwin’s birth and the 150^th year of the publication of his book “The Origin of the Species”. At the age of 22 Darwin left for a trip around the world, on a brigantine of the English Royal Navy. The voyage took 5 years. The journey began from Davenport and Darwin visited the coasts of South America and Australia to make geographic surveys . During the journey Darwin observed various animal and vegetable species, in particular in the Galapagos Islands where Darwin stopped to study the differences between the chaffinches living there; in fact, he noticed that under the influence of environmental factors (nutrition) they had developed different forms of beaks.
